DYNASTONE GENERATION 2 PIPE
AND MANHOLES
For over a hundred years the effectiveness of
many wastewater collection and treatment systems has been significantly
reduced by corrosion. This corrosion is primarily caused by the
generation of sulfuric acid that is produced by the oxidation of
hydrogen sulfide gas. To combat this corrosion, Dynastone formulated
a new acid-resistant material that has excellent economics and
is easy to fabricate using traditional production techniques.
Dynastone Generation 2 pipes and manholes are corrosion
resistant products able to resist attack from
sulfuric acid. A chemically activated
high volume fly ash mixture that greatly improves the durability
of the product. Fly ash is an integral part of the Dynastone technology.
To clearly define it, the majority of the cement used in a standard
concrete mix design is removed and replaced with a large volume
of high quality fly ash and a proprietary activator. This activator
reacts with the mix to bond the material together. Simply put,
Dynastone uses a different glue than conventional pipe
Accelerated Acid Test
In order to provide a reliable indicator of long-term performance
in a sanitary sewer, Dynastone used a test method developed by the
concrete pipe industry and independent testing laboratories. This
test subjected the material to severe conditions and an accelerated
corrosion process. Specifically, the test method involves acid
immersion of the product and brush tests.
Test cylinders are totally immersed in a 1.0 pH sulfuric acid
solution for a minimum of thirty cycles. Each cycle consists of
a 24-hour soak in the acid bath, followed by removal, rinsing and
scrubbing of the surface of the test cylinders. The cylinders are
then weighed and put back into the acid bath that has been replenished
to a 1.0 pH. At the conclusion of 30 cycles at least one of the
cylinders is compression tested to assure that the material has
maintained its strength for the duration of the test. Finally,
to determine the ultimate limits of each material being tested,
the cylinders are taken to the point of complete failure in the
acid bath.
Economics:
Dynastone Generation 2 pipe provides excellent economics and is extremely cost
effective. The material cost is slightly more than that of conventional
concrete pipe. However, the increased structural considerations
over PVC pipe and the extended service life over conventional concrete
pipe make it easily justifiable. When compared to PVC type pipes,
Dynastone pipe will be able to compete on an even footing. When
compared to PVC lined concrete pipe, the cost savings can be almost
half that of the lined product since PVC lining isn’t necessary
with a Dynastone product.
Why use Dynastone Generation 2 Pipe?
• The pipe is rigid and structural in nature. Pipe embedment is important,
but with Dynastone 95% of pipe envelope strength is in the structure
of the pipe. Dynastone gives the owner the strength of concrete
with acid resistance of plastic. • The pipe is economical. With
engineered bedding required only to the springline of the pipe, less
aggregate is required.
Dynastone is price competitive with the alternative plastic products.
This allows a safer rigid structural pipe to be used in lieu of
the alternative. • The need for PVC lined concrete pipe is no
longer necessary. •
A pozzolanic reaction occurs.
Although the reaction is somewhat different when compared to an ordinary
Portland
cement
mix, it creates an inert
product. • All facilities fabricating Dynastone Pipe will be
required to be American Concrete Pipe Association certified plants.
Why use Dynastone Generation 2 Manholes?
•
The long term structural capacity of the manhole is significantly
enhanced over that of an ordinary concrete manhole. The acid resistance
helps eliminate the concern over the loss of wall thickness due
to corrosion. Consequently, the structural and load characteristics
remain more constant. • Dynastone manhole material is economical
and cost effective. The additional cost is minimal when compared
to the additional
life of the manhole. There are additional cost savings because
Dynastone manholes do not need to be lined or coated. • Smaller
manhole sections lowered into a larger existing manhole allow Dynastone
manhole products to be used as a retrofit
on projects were excessive corrosion has already occurred. This
saves the owner from completely replacing the existing structure. • A
pozzolanic reaction occurs. Although the reaction is somewhat different
when compared to an ordinary Portland cement
mix, it creates an inert
product. • All facilities fabricating Dynastone
manhole material will be required to be American Concrete Pipe Association
or National
Precast Concrete
Association certified plants.
